Workshops offered in the following areas:
- Bullying - "Bullying is one of the most underrated and enduring problems in schools today and is a reality in the lives of all children, whether they are bullies, victims, or witnesses" (Bully B'Ware Productions, 2004). Research shows that people who bully in school are more prone toward criminal violence, domestic abuse, and suicide. As parents, teachers, and administrators, it's our responsibility to serve as advocates for children at risk, both those being bullied and those doing the bullying. This seminar is designed to help you identify bullying behaviors and determine strategies for dealing with it.
- Change - "Neither situations nor people can be altered by the interference of an outsider. If they are to be altered, that alteration must come from within" (Bottome, Survival - 1943). Change is a difficult proposition regardless of who you are, the circumstance you're in, or whether the change is positive or negative. But, when we deal with change incrementally, it is much easier to handle. This seminar addresses the Learning/Change Model and discusses ways to successfully make it through the transformative process.
- Character Development - "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved" (Helen Keller, Helen Keller's Journal - 1938). The Six Pillars of Character (Character Counts!): trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship are essential qualities for all human beings. In fact, they ought to serve as the foundation on which all decisions are made. This seminar discusses how, through character development, we can become better citizens of our homes, institutions, and community. It offers practical strategies for teaching the development of character education.
- Communication b/w the Sexes - "Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then" (Katharine Hepburn). Communication between any two persons can be a very complex proposition, regardless of demographics. When you toss in the gendered issues we confront as a result of stereotypical training, it serves to compound the issue. Women and men are raised in two different worlds and are then required to come together in peaceful coexistence. Such a task can be daunting without an understanding of how our gendered experiences influence our ways of processing information, collecting data, and making decisions. This seminar is designed to raise awareness regarding the impact of gender (psychological sex) on communication with the other sex (biological), as well as offer suggestions on how we may adapt to and minimize these societally created differences so as to become more productive individuals in the home, the workplace, and the community.
- Conflict Resolution - "The world is wide, and I will not waste my life in friction when it could be turned into momentum" (Willard, Frances Willard - 1912). Conflict is a natural phenomenon of the human experience. Yet, most of us coil from it, fearful of its consequences. Conflict, when handled appropriately, serves as a catalyst for positive change - change in attitude, change in perspective, change in relationships. This seminar addresses the nature of conflict, discusses types of conflict resolution, and offers strategies for experiencing conflict as a positive.
- Dealing w/Difficult People - "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your mind off your goals" (Unknown). We all know what it's like to deal with difficult people who serve as an obstacle to our daily health and well-being. Difficult people rob us of the joys of life, create unnecessary stress, and thrive in negativity. For a person to be difficult, they must have an environment in which to function. Once given permission to act out, difficult people will choose to do so. This seminar discusses different types of difficult people, how to detect difficult people, and strategies on minimizing and, in some instances, eliminating their impact.
- Establishing Effective Communication (via verbal, visual, and vocal means) - "Communication leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing" (Rollo May). To effectively communicate with others is one of the most difficult challenges we face on a daily basis. Regardless of the nature of our communication interaction, there are so many opportunities for misunderstanding, miscommunication, conflict, etc. Consequently, it is essential we understand what it means to truly communicate with another individual. This seminar addresses the nature of communication, essential communication principles, and strategies for effectively communicating through words, voice, and body.
- Equity - "Equity speaks softly and wins in the end. But it is expedience, with its loud voice, that sets the time of victory" (Bird, Born Female - 1968). Human beings, with all their diversity, introduce vast opportunities for judgment. That judgment, however, disrupts our relationships, productivity, and overall happiness. Equity can never be achieved until we begin to understand the nature of inequity. This seminar covers what it means to treat others equitably, ways to recognize instances of inequity, and strategies for creating equitable climates.
- Leadership - "Leadership is much more an art, a belief, a condition of the heart, than a set of things to do. The visible signs of artful leadership are expressed, ultimately, in its practice" (Max DePree). We may not be able to succinctly define what a leader is but we all know it when we see it. While we may not be able to definitively describe a leader, there are certain qualities that to must be present in all good leaders. This seminar addresses the qualities necessary to be a good leader, how to lead with passion, and ways to invite others on the journey.
- Life Transitions - "The future is not a result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created--created first in the mind and will, created next in activity. The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them, changes both the maker and the destination" (John Schaar). Whether it's the first day of school, graduation day, the first real job, the wedding day, the first child, the new career, the move from elementary to middle to high school, etc., transitions in the life cycle can be difficult. This seminar addresses the transitional experience and takes a look at how we may acquire the right tools and skills necessary for smooth shifts in the life experience.
- Peer Pressure - "The more a soul conforms to the sanity of others, the more does it become insane" (Webb, The House in Dormer Forest - 1920). In a society where people are pressured to say certain things, act certain ways, and be certain people, it is difficult to find your own unique niche. It is through our diversity we experience a richness and depth of life far surpassing anything superficial. Conformity for conformity's sake robs us of the opportunity to discover our own inner self and become comfortable in the skin we're in. This seminar examines peer pressure concerns, ways to recognize the impact of peer pressure, and strategies for self empowerment and individuality.
- Self Discovery - "We wait all these years to find someone who understands us, I thought, someone who accepts us as we are, someone with a wizard's power to melt stone to sunlight, who can bring us happiness in spite of trials, who can face our dragons in the night, who can transform us into the soul we choose to be. Just yesterday I found that magical Someone is the face we see in the mirror: It's us and our homemade masks" (Richard Bach). To reach our fullest potential as human beings, we must first know our strengths, weaknesses, capabilities, fears, inhibitions - we must first become intimately acquainted with our inner self, our inner soul. This seminar addresses issues of self-awareness, discusses ways to better acquaint yourself with the one you see in the mirror everyday, and assesses how this knowledge may propel you into a positive life experience.
- Team Building - "Synergy is the highest activity of life; it creates new untapped alternatives; it values and exploits the mental, emotional, and psychological differences between people" (Stephen Covey). To produce the maximum output in the shortest amount of time requires that individuals work together toward a common goal. When people work together as a team, they no longer view themselves as individuals but, rather, as essential components that make up the whole. This seminar focuses on the importance of teamwork and offers strategies for creating and developing teams that will produce creatively, energetically, and efficiently.
